חוּפּהf. (b. h. חֻפָּה; חפף I) 1) covering, canopy, esp. bridal chamber; also (= כניסה לח׳) the entrance of the bride into the bridal chamber; wedding. Kidd.5a, a. fr. ח׳ קונה the introduction into the bridal chamber constitutes possession (legitimate marriage). Ib. 3a למעוטי ח׳ to exclude, as a form of marriage, the delivery by her father to take her into the bridal chamber. Gen. R. s. 94 לא ראה בחוּפָּתִי was not present at my wedding. Snh.108a עשה ח׳ לבנו arranged a bridal room for his son. Ab. V, 21 בןי״ח לח׳ at eighteen years one is fit for marriage. Y.Succ.II, 53a top; Bab. Ib. 25b בני ח׳ wedding party; a. fr.Pl. חוּפּוֹת. Lam.
